THOMAS DWORZAK has covered world crises including in Afghanistan, Iraq, Chechnya, and Kosovo. He also photographed events in Israel, the refugee crisis in Pakistan, and revolutions in Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and the Ukraine.
SUSAN MEISELAS photographed the insurrection in Nicaragua and documented other human rights issues in Latin America. She has also done major projects on Kurdistan and Chile. In 1992, she was named a MacArthur Fellow.
ALEX KERSHAW is the New York Times–best selling author of The Longest Winter, and The Life and Times of Robert Capa among other books. Capa was one of the twentieth century’s most acclaimed photojournalists; his work is represented in 101 Photos for Press Freedom.
MAGNUM PHOTOS is a photographic cooperative of great diversity and distinction owned by its photographer-members. With powerful individual vision, Magnum photographers chronicle the world and interpret its peoples, events, issues and personalities. Through its four editorial offices in New York, London, Paris and Tokyo, Magnum Photos provides photographs to the press, publishers, advertising, television, galleries and museums across the world.
REPORTERS SANS FRONTIÈRES (Reporters Without Borders) defends journalists and media assistants imprisoned or persecuted for doing their job and exposes the mistreatment and torture of them in many countries; fights against censorship and laws that undermine press freedom; gives financial aid each year to 300 journalists or media outlets in difficulty as well as to the families of imprisoned journalists; and works to improve the safety of journalists.
Bonnell Robinson, Director of Exhibitions, The Art Institute of Boston:
We are honored to collaborate with the Consulate General of France in Boston and to join with Magnum Photos in presenting this exhibition of the work of Magnum photographers over the past 75 years. Magnum is arguably the finest photo agency in the world and these photographs represent some of the most outstanding works by its members.
These photographs have been gathered to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of Reporters without Borders. The images document not only critical moments and turning points in recent history, but also attest to the courage, determination, and integrity of the journalists—writers and photographers—working for a free and independent press. The current crises in the Middle East, especially in Egypt, Libya, and Syria, have made us even more acutely aware of the risks taken by the individuals gathering news to provide us with the facts and evidence so essential to interpretation of events and humane action.
Our thanks to Christophe Guilhou, the Consul General, and Nathalie Bastin, Press and Public Affairs Attachée at the Consulate, for being extraordinary partners in this project. Their ideas and work were critical to the presentation of these photographs and to bringing three of the exhibiting photojournalists to Boston for these events.
In addition we are grateful to Clement Saccomani at Magnum Photos, Paris; Glenn Ruga at the Photographic Resource Center of Boston; and our generous supporters who have made this exhibition and related events possible: the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Reporters sans Frontières, Edenred, Ipsen, bioMérieux, Veolia Energy, and Boston Coach/Best of Boston.
