Half a century of gay acceptance coming out of the closet
From unattainable ideal to inadequate perspective
From 1967, everything changed for gays and lesbians within less than half of a century. The Dutch hardly view homosexuality as abject anymore: a sin, a crime, a disease. Rejecting orientations have become unacceptable. A new reality has overtaken the old one.
But what gay acceptance means remains a question to which there is no single answer. Gays and straights have come to ‘accept’ each other as simply the same – or simply but not the same – or the same but never simply.
Was Gerrit Komrij right when he said (in the 2008 Mosse Lecture) that people in the Netherlands have no clue what acceptance means? But who does, then?
The annual Mosse Lecture is an initiative of the George Mosse Fund Foundation for the promotion of the study of gay/lesbian history at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). It takes place in collaboration with IHLIA (LGBT Heritage). George L. Mosse (1918–1999) was a well-known liberal historian of German-Jewish descent who was a visiting professor of gay studies at the University of Amsterdam in 1988.
Previous Mosse lectures were given by Hafid Bouazza, Marjan Sax, Ruud Bouma alias Dolly Bellefleur, Bas Heijne, Maaike Meijer, Gerardjan Rijnders, Gerrit Komrij, Gloria Wekker, Stephan Sanders, M. Februari, Ted van Lieshout, Jet Bussemaker, Mohammed Benzakour, Hedy d’Ancona, and Simone van Saarloos.
Immediately before the 2017 Mosse lecture, IHLIA is opening an exhibition on “Red Queers and Gay Studies at the University of Amsterdam”: OBA, 3rd floor, start time (subject to change) 15:00.
Gerhardus “Gert” Hekma (1951-2022) was a lecturer in gay and lesbian studies at the University of Amsterdam (UvA, Department of Sociology) from 1984 to 2017. He published numerous articles and many books, including Homoseksualiteit, een medische reputatie [Homosexuality, A Medical Reputation] (1987), De roze rand van donker Amsterdam [The Pink Edge of Dark Amsterdam] (1992), Homoseksualiteit in Nederland van 1730 tot de moderne tijd [Homosexuality in the Netherlands from 1730 to the Modern Era] (2004), and ABC van perversies [ABC of Perversions] (2009). He also gave lectures, organized conferences, and led all kinds of other initiatives around the theme of gay/lesbian/sexuality. In 2002, he was one of the founders of the Mosse Foundation. On the occasion of his retirement from the UvA, he had given the annual Mosse Lecture himself.

In the 2017 Mosse Lecture, Hekma defended gay culture as follows: acceptance is silver, gay culture is gold.

Hekma looked back on half a century of gay acceptance in the Netherlands. His question remained critical: what does acceptance mean when sexual radicalism and difference come under pressure?

In 2017, Gert Hekma delivered the Mosse Lecture under the title “Fifty Years of Gay Acceptance Out of the Closet: From Unattainable Ideal to Inadequate Perspective.”
The lecture also marked his farewell from the University of Amsterdam as a lecturer in gay and lesbian studies.
