Faith Ringgold is an acclaimed painter, writer, speaker, mixed media sculptor and performance artist. She is a professor emeritus at the University of California San Diego, and is best known for her painted story quilts — art that combines painting, quilted fabric and storytelling. She has exhibited in major museums around the world and is represented in the permanent collection of The National Museum of American Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, among many others.
Her first book, Tar Beach, won a Caldecott Honor as well as the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration. She has written and illustrated sixteen children’s books. Ringgold has received more than 75 awards, fellowships, citations and honors.
