Cincinnati
The launch of this partnership between the Global Mosse Lecture Series, the University of Cincinnati, and Miami University in Oxford honors a unique historical milestone: in April 1983, the renowned scholar George L. Mosse delivered a foundational series of lectures in Cincinnati on “Germans and Jews,” which led to the publication of his pathfinding volume German Jews Beyond Judaism—a text recognized today as a seminal work in the field. To carry this legacy forward, Year 1 of the series will open by focusing directly on the theme of “Germans and Jews,” offering a platform to reflect on the impact of Mosse’s book and extend the conversation to modern scholarship. Year 2 will pivot to a regional focus, centering on the theme of history and culture within Appalachia.
Designed as a multi-tiered educational engagement, each annual iteration will bridge higher education with the local community. A primary goal of the project is to include regional high school students, providing them with special opportunities to visit the University of Cincinnati campus and meet directly with the visiting speakers. These signature public lectures and youth outreach events will be further paired with separate classroom meetings for students at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
