Lecture Series Description: The annual Mosse lecture is an initiative of the George L. Mosse Fonds to promote the study of gay/lesbian history at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). It is organized in collaboration with IHLIA LGBTI Heritage. Mosse Lectures have been given by Hafid Bouazza, Marjan Sax, Ruud Douma aka Dolly Bellefleur, Bas Heijne, Maaike Meijer, Gerardjan Rijnders, Gerrit Komrij, Gloria Wekker, Stephan Sanders, M. Februari, Ted van Lieshout, Jet Bussemaker, Mohammed Benzakour, Hedy d’Ancona, Simon(e) van Saarloos, Gert Hekma, Karin Spaink, Joke Swiebel, and David Weissman.
Maaike Meijer is a Dutch literary scholar, biographer, writer, and emeritus professor of Gender Studies at Maastricht University. She studied Dutch language and literature at the University of Amsterdam and became actively involved in the emerging feminist movement during the 1970s. From 1984, she worked as a researcher in Comparative Literature at Utrecht University, studying reading theory, gender within the literary system, and the work of postwar Dutch women poets. She received her PhD in 1988 for De lust tot lezen: Nederlandse dichteressen en het literaire system [The Desire to Read: Dutch Women Poets and the Literary System], a study that helped establish gender as an important analytical perspective within Dutch literary studies.
In 1997, Meijer was appointed to a special chair in Gender, Representation, and Power at Maastricht University, endowed by the Dutch feminist magazine Opzij. The following year, she became Professor of Gender Studies and the founding director of the university’s Centre for Gender and Diversity, which she directed until 2013. Her research and publications address Dutch literature, poetry, popular song, cultural representation, migration, feminism, and biography from the perspectives of gender and diversity. Meijer has written acclaimed biographies of the poets M. Vasalis and F. Harmsen van Beek, published in 2011 and 2018, respectively. Her later work includes Radeloze helden: De verbeelding van mannelijkheid in literatuur en film [Desperate Heroes: Representations of Masculinity in Literature and Film, 2023], an examination of representations of masculinity in literature and cinema. In 2006, Meijer delivered the annual Mosse Lecture, titled “Leve de penisnijd” [Long Live the Penis Envy].
