Lecture Series Description: Our starting point is the observation that the classic coup d’état (as an abrogation of the constitution through rapid, violent action) currently seems to be changing: In Europe and the United States, the classic coup d’état is being replaced by the gradual transformation of the constitution, characterized by its erosion from within and the dynamic breakdown of the rule of law and the separation of powers, driven by elected governments. There will be a historical-systematic lecture on the significance of the coup d’état with regard to the first third of the 20th century, a lecture on coups d’état from a post-colonial perspective taking the example of West Africa, and there will be talks on the media and aesthetic dimension of coups d’état. In addition, we are organizing a film series in cooperation with the Berlin Zeughauskino and with the financial support of the Presidium of Humboldt University, featuring films such as “Woman Without Men” (D/AT/FR 2009, R: Shirin Neshat), “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat” (B/FR/NL 2024, R: Johan Grimonprez), “The Sixth” (USA 2024, R: Andrea Nix Fine, Sean Fine) and Nostalgia de la Luz” (Chile/FR/D 2010, Patricio Guzmán).
Lecture Series Description (German): Vom Putsch vor laufender Kamera bis hin zur Indienstnahme der sozialen Medien für Angriffe auf die Gewaltenteilung: Autokratische Machtübernahmen gleichen nicht selten einem politischen Schauspiel. Es ist daher nicht verwunderlich, dass sie so oft verfilmt wurden. In Kooperation mit dem Zeughauskino des Deutschen Historischen Museums veranstalten die Mosse Lectures im Januar und Februar ein filmisches Begleitprogramm zur Vortragsreihe Staatssreiche. Zwischen Putsch und Verfassungscoup. Die Filmreihe Staatsstreiche präsentiert Dokumentar-, Spiel- und Essayfilme der letzten 20 Jahre, die politische Umstürze aus ganz unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln zeigen. Was sie eint, ist der Versuch, die politischen Geschehnisse als komplexe Verflechtungsgeschichten zu erzählen und dabei nach den kulturellen Machtverschiebungen zu fragen, die mit ihnen einhergehen. Was haben Staatsstreiche mit dem Erstarken von Autoritarismus und traditionellen Männlichkeitsbildern zu tun? Inwieweit sind sie mit gesamtgesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen sowie mit Einzelschicksalen jenseits der Politik verwoben? Welche Spuren hinterlassen Putsche und wie werden sie erinnert? Welche neuen Perspektiven kann ein postkolonialer Blick auf Staatsstreiche eröffnen? Und wie lassen sich Staatsstreiche überhaupt filmisch erzählen?
Description of Film: In Nostalgia de la luz/Nostalgia for the Light, director Patricio Guzmán, who also narrates, draws parallels between astronomers’ search to understand humanity’s past and the search by Chilean women to find the remains of their relatives executed during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.
